Alejandro Tosti

Senior Alejandro Tosti played in his final tournament as a Gator on Sunday.

What started as a promising third round of stroke play at the NCAA Championships for the No. 6 Florida men’s golf team ended in a disappointing finish on Sunday afternoon.

UF finished 18th out of 30 teams, closing at 12 over for third-round play. Through three rounds in Stillwater, Oklahoma, the Gators accumulated a score of 886 (22 over), just missing the top-15 cut by four strokes. Duke (10 under), the host of the championships, Oklahoma State, (7 under) and Texas Tech (3 under) were the only teams under par after the completion of third-round play.

At one point on Sunday, Florida climbed up the leaderboard to a tie for 9th after completing the first nine holes. However, UF couldn’t sustain its surge, tumbling back down the leaderboard as the day went on.

Two birdies were all the Gators men’s golf could convert on the back nine, struggling heavily. Combined, UF made 12 bogeys and four double bogeys on the back half of the course.

In what turned out to be his final round of collegiate golf, senior Alejandro Tosti finished the day 4 over after scoring a 76. Tosti finished the event tied for 43rd individually, the highest of any Gator.

Junior Gordon Neale had the best third-round score for the Gators, shooting a 73 (1 over) on the day, making two birdies to go along with 13 pars for the round.

After a great performance yesterday, freshman John Axelsen cooled off in the third round, shooting a 75 (3 over) on Sunday. He had three birdies, but three bogeys and a double bogey on the back nine exacerbated the team’s struggles on the final few holes.

Andy Zhang shot a 76 (4 over) in third-round play and made an eagle on hole one, the only eagle by any golfer from UF on the day. Through three rounds of play, the sophomore finished tied for 78th individually at 8 over for the weekend.

Chris Nido had the most disappointing day for Florida on Sunday, making three bogeys and three double bogeys on the back nine.

The freshman shot an 80 (8 over) for third-round play, finishing at 9 over after a promising 1-under performance after the first nine holes.

The NCAA Championships will continue on Monday with 15 teams competing for eight spots. The top-eight teams will compete for a national championship in match play with the champion being crowned after Wednesday’s round.
