Underground art isn’t restricted to street art at the Mass Visual Arts’ third annual art exhibition.

The nonprofit art organization’s underground-themed showcase will begin at 6 p.m. Friday through April 7 at The Wooly, 20 N. Main St.

Dale Gunnoe, 38, director of Mass Visual Arts, said the theme is ambiguous to leave open interpretation.

Gunnoe said people can expect different types of art, video and sound piece, from artists throughout the country, some professional and others amateur.

Constance Humphries, 46, of Asheville, N.C., will have a five-minute video displayed during the exhibition. The piece, which she created last year, explores the emotions people hide. Her feelings about her parents’ divorce inspired the video, she said.

“My work is very personal,” she said. “That’s usually where it starts.”

She said her work is abstract and doesn’t tell a story.

Margaret Ross Tolbert, of Gainesville, takes a different approach with her art. She said she wanted to show a narrative.

Tolbert, who has participated in the event before, will display a painting and a video this year.

She hopes the show gives her the opportunity to break into new circles.

“I’m just excited to see what a lot of the artists come up with,” she said.
