Although many see Labor Day as an opportunity for a weekend getaway, Gainesville is also home to a healthy number of events that will make the holiday just as enjoyable as a small vacation. In addition to the Bey Dey Dance Party, Less Than Jake Wake and Bake Weekend, and Chester Bennington Tribute Show already covered elsewhere in this issue, here are a few events to check out over the long weekend.

West King String Band at First Magnitude

For a more laid-back concert atmosphere, this is the perfect show to hit this weekend. First Magnitude Brewing Company, located at 1220 SE Veitch St., often hosts free live concerts in a relaxed brewery atmosphere. West King String Band, a bluegrass/folk/country group from St. Augustine, Florida, will make their stop at First Magnitude this Friday. Admission is free, with the brewery’s various beers available for the entirety of the event, which will run from 7 to 11 p.m.

Michigan vs. Florida Football

Although UF’s first football game of the season will be held at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, that’s not stopping various bars and restaurants around town from hosting events. Although places like First Magnitude have announced official viewing parties via Facebook, there’s no doubt that every bar and restaurant around town will be streaming the game for any fans who weren’t able to make the trek to see it in person. Game time is at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Labor Daze Fest

Self-described as an event “by locals, for locals and about locals,” the sixth annual Labor Daze Fest, to be held Sunday  Bo Diddley Plaza (located at 111 E University Ave.) is set to be an event with activities for all ages. The festival will host five local bands, 50 vendors, a rock wall and much more in an outdoor atmosphere. The event will be held from 4 to 10 p.m. and will be free and open to the public.

FEST Wrestling One Year Anniversary Bash

For the older, rowdier crowd, FEST Wrestling will be hosting an event at Eight-Seconds, located at 201 W University Ave., from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday. FEST, Gainesville’s annual punk rock festival that draws bands and guests from around the world in October, is also host to various wrestling events throughout the festival. FEST holds various other wrestling events throughout the year, and Sunday’s event will host over 20 wrestlers set to battle it out in the ring. Tickets are $12 in advance and $17 at the door. Only patrons 18 and up will be permitted to attend.
