What's closed or canceled due to Hurricane Irma

Latest News 

Hurricane Irma made landfall in the Florida Keys on Sunday morning around 9 a.m. as a Category 4 storm with sustained winds up to 130 mph, according to CNN. Irma made a second landfall in Marco Island with winds of 120 mph as a Category 3 around 3:30 p.m. 

Gainesville is now in a Hurricane Warning. UF classes have now been canceled for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. 

UF will open a second shelter at Southwest Recreation Center, which will open Sunday at 10 a.m. It has a capacity of 2,000 and a no re-entry policy.

The shelter at Steinbrenner Band Hall is full, at maximum capacity of 200. 

Football

Florida’s first home football game, which was set for noon Saturday against Northern Colorado, is now canceled. The game will not be rescheduled because the teams do not share an open date for the rest of the season.

Schools:

UF classes have been canceled Friday through Wednesday.

UF’s dining services will continue regular hours until Saturday evening. Certain halls will be open Sunday and Monday, with details to be announced.

Santa Fe College classes have been canceled Friday through Monday.

Alachua County Public Schools have canceled classes Friday through Tuesday.

Oak Hall School will be closed Friday through Monday.

Saint Leo’s Gainesville Education Center is closed through Sunday.

Local: 

The Alachua County Courthouse will remain open Friday.

UF anticipates opening two shelters for students, faculty and their families, with details to be finalized and announced Friday.

Alachua County Emergency Management plans to open at least two shelters Friday at 10 a.m. —one at the Easton-Newberry Archery Center, located at 24880 NW 16th Ave., and one specifically for residents with special needs at the Senior Recreation Center, located at 5701 NW 34th Blvd.

Alachua County Waste Services will remain open during normal business hours.

Alachua County Library will close Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Shelters:

On campus shelters:

FULL: The Steinbrenner Band Hall will be available as a shelter starting 10 a.m. on Sunday. Students need a Gator One ID and guests need to be accompanied by someone with a Gator One. 

Southwest Recreation Center is another on-campus shelter. It is not pet friendly and people should bring their own bedding.

Medical:

UF Health Shands Hospital will remain open 24/7.

The small and large animal hospitals at UF will remain open for emergency service. UF's veterinary hospital will close for routine appointments on Sunday and reopen Tuesday. 

UF Health Physicians will be open on Friday but closed on Monday. Appointments are being rescheduled. 

UF Health Shands outpatient services will be open Friday. A decision will be made Friday morning about whether to reschedule Monday's appointments. 

UF College of Dentistry's clinic will be closed on Monday.

All SIMED locations will be closed Monday.

Food:

On campus, open from Friday to Saturday:

Beaty Pod will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

Fresh Food Company and Gator Corner Dining Center will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. 

Graham POD/Chomp It will be open 24 hours for the two days

Moe's Southwest Grill will be open from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Rawlings POD/Subway will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. 

Reitz Union Food Court is closed.

All buildings will close when winds become too strong. 

Off campus

Bento Cafe was unsure if it would close.

Chipotle is waiting for corporate to decide if it will close but a manager said it is likely they will close.

Jimmy John's: TBD.

Leonardo’s Pizza by the Slice and Bistro 1245 plan on staying open as long as the restaurants have electricity and their employees aren’t in danger.

Mi Apa was unsure if it would close.

Peach Valley closed Friday and won't reopen until Tuesday at 7 a.m.

The Social will stay open through Saturday will most likely close Sunday.

Salty Dog Saloon will be remain open unless there is an evacuation for Gainesville. The bar has generators and is ready for a power outage.

Tijuana Flats will stay open through Saturday but might close after.

All Publix stores in Gainesville plan to remain open and maintain regular hours during Hurricane Irma.

Pascal's Coffeehouse will be closed Saturday through Monday.

Entertainment and Events:

The Hippodrome State Theatre will be closed Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Performances are canceled, and those who have tickets may call the Hippodrome box office to exchange them.

The soccer match between UF and FSU on Friday has been canceled.

The soccer match between UF and USF that was originally scheduled for Sunday at 6 p.m. has been canceled.

The Active Ankle Tournament for volleyball is now only one match between UF and Michigan State on Friday at 5 p.m. No other matches will be rescheduled for this tournament.

Steve Spurrier’s UF Bookstore book signing and meet-and greet at 5 p.m. Saturday has been canceled and may be rescheduled.

A concert set to feature country star Billy Dean at the Thomas Center on Friday has been relocated to Live Oak, Florida, about 70 miles north of Gainesville. Doors are still set to open at 6 p.m., and the show will begin at 7 p.m.

A Friday night concert, part of the weekly Free Fridays concert series, featuring ska-reggae group The Duppies at the Bo Diddley Community Plaza has been canceled.

UF Events:

MCDA’s “A Conversation on the First Amendment,” initially scheduled for Friday night, has been canceled.

A 9/11 Day of Service event from the Collegiate Veterans Success Center has been canceled.

The Multicultural Greek Council Showcase has been postponed to Sept. 21.

Theatre Strike Force's Friday night show has been cancelled. 

The Honors Involvement Conference, a tabling event hosted by the Honors Ambassadors, was cancelled. It was initially scheduled for Sunday. 

UF Hillel will be closed Friday and Monday.

The Lubavitch Chabad Jewish Center will be open Friday night for Shabbat services and open Saturday morning. 

The Chomp-The-Flu event has been postponed.
