Students will see more bike repair stations pop up on campus by Spring Break, which caused debate at Tuesday night’s UF Student Senate meeting.
A $12,000 bill for the addition of 10 bike repair stations across campus was passed among two other resolutions.
Four stations will be at graduate and family housing locations such as Corry Village, University Village South, Tanglewood Village and Maguire Village. Two stations will be built in the Tolbert and Broward areas for undergraduate students. The remaining four will be scattered across populated campus areas such as Norman Hall, Carleton Auditorium, UF Levin College of Law and the Cancer and Genetics Research Complex.
Funding was taken from student reserves, which brought a heated debate from several senators on whether to spend that money on the repair spots.
Sen. Preston Jones was in favor of the bill but disagreed with the funds coming from student reserves.
“If we’re going to spend reserve funds, it should be in an emergency,” he said.
Sen. Jenny Clements said students have requested more bike repair spots.
“With this funding, this will be another project that will benefit students overall,” she said.
Jones suggested the project be pushed to Fall so the bike repairs would be included in the next budget.
