Santa Fe College senior Apoorva Bangalore Raviprasad, an astrophysics major, left India for the United States in 2022, feeling confused about how the future would unfold and struggling with her identity.
SFC’s Academy of Science and Technology, a new charter school initiative that will be run inside of the college’s northwest campus at 3000 NW 83 St, will offer students starting in ninth grade an associate’s of science degree in addition to a high school diploma. At a Thursday night meeting, prospective parents learned more about programs and application processes.
SFC welcomes students of all ages. Students older than 25 made up more than 20% of SFC’s Fall 2021 enrollment. This amount has remained consistent throughout the years at the college, according to the Santa Fe factbook. Nonetheless, older students have thrived in SFC’s diverse environment.
Santa Fe Academy of Science and Technology will be the first of its kind in Gainesville by having a curriculum offering college courses and industry certifications that comes with no costs or specific requirements from students.
Santa Fe College canceled classes starting at 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.
The Alachua County Heart Walk made its return to Santa Fe College for the first time since 2019 after three years held virtually because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The forum highlighted future plans of the community college to make a more equitable campus through new administration positions and programs dedicated to providing opportunities to Black students. Speakers also reflected on SFC programs meant to prepare East Gainesville residents for career and higher education options.
Attendees gathered at Jackson N. Sasser Fine Arts Hall to hear Padilla and five SFC Master Artist Series students perform. The event raised money for the Climb for Cancer Foundation.
SFC’s food pantry, Saints Food Share, encountered an increased demand for food from students since school started, Sarah Blanc, a SFC civic engagement and service specialist, said: The pantry is getting three times the number of normal requests for food ahead of its Hunger Action Month Food Drive.
College for Kids, a program hosted by Santa Fe, allows kids to use summer to immerse themselves in subjects typically not taught until college. Registration for the 2022 camp opened May 4.

Santa Fe College upholds its plans to host a limited-capacity graduation ceremony in April despite lifting all COVID-19 restrictions. Santa Fe lifted COVID-19 precautions related to serving food, onsite class size and event size across all SFC properties Monday. However, graduates will still be socially distanced at their April celebrations.
Two years later, the diversity at SFC remains almost identical to what it was when he arrived 一 with a Black population hovering at about 12%. With SFC in-person again, the issues Broadie once aimed to tackle have resurfaced.
