Center fielder set to return to lineup tonight

In the first three games of the baseball season, UF's starting lineup has been a well-oiled machine operating with interchangeable parts.

Three different players have started at designated hitter, two have seen time at catcher and nine have taken the mound to pitch.

It looks like fans should get used to the roster mix-ups.

"The starting lineup is going to be changed through the whole year, it just depends on how things go," freshman pitcher Tommy Toledo said.

Tuesday, another starter, sophomore Matt den Dekker, will see his first action of the season.

The center fielder missed the opening series against Siena for a violation of team rules, but he will be back for Tuesday's game against Eastern Michigan at 6:30 p.m.

Freshman Josh Adams did a more-than-capable job of filling in for den Dekker against Siena. Adams led the Gators with seven RBI and 10 total bases in the opening series, including two home runs on Sunday.

Adams had never played in the outfield before this weekend and only hit six home runs in his senior year of high school.

UF coach Kevin O'Sullivan was quick to dismiss any possibility of a controversy at the position.

"Den Dekker's our center fielder," O'Sullivan said. "Josh did a great job this weekend, but Matt will be our center fielder. … It's a good problem to have. I'd rather have a couple more players than we need than a couple less."

He added that he is comfortable with Adams at all three outfield positions.

Adams knows his role on the team and is fine with going back to the bench when den Dekker comes back, but he may also see starts as a designated hitter if his bat stays hot.

"I don't really know what's going on with that, but whenever I'm needed I'm definitely going to be in there," Adams said.

O'Sullivan wants to work out the kinks in his roster as soon as possible, and he plans to use different pitchers and designated hitters whenever he can to get them experience.

"They can't get better sitting on the bench," he said.

Also returning to the roster are senior infielder Dustin Bamberg and junior catcher Brett Smith. They were suspended along with den Dekker.

"He had been one of our hottest hitters," O'Sullivan said of Bamberg. "We're anxious to get him back."

UF (3-0) will start left-handed junior Stephen Locke against Eastern Michigan (0-4) Tuesday, but Wednesday night's starter is still up in the air. Locke went 3-3 in nine appearances last season with a 6.95 ERA. He has not pitched this season.

Freshman Travis Lawler and sophomore Clint Franklin are the likely candidates for the second game.

Eastern Michigan was swept by New Mexico in its opening weekend. The Eagles were outscored by an average of 5.75 runs per game.

O'Sullivan said the team would not scout Eastern Michigan too heavily, especially considering the lack of information available this early in the season, but he won't take them lightly - the Eagles went 21-4 in the Mid-American Conference in 2007.

The opening series sweep provided momentum for the Gators heading into tonight's and Wednesday's meetings with the Eagles.

"We have a lot of confidence, also," Toledo said. "Defensively, we put up so many good performances through the whole series. Hitting-wise, if we put up 10 runs a game, it's going to be pretty easy for the pitchers to come out and have confidence."
