I put 20,000 miles on my car within two years traveling from Gainesville to my hometown, Royal Palm Beach, Fla., and to my dad’s house in Atlanta, Georgia.

Needless to say I’ve been on the road a whole hell of a lot, and about half way through that 20,000 miles I realized I should be enjoying my time on I-95.

So many people focus on the destination, but the cliché is true; half the fun is getting there. Here are my tips for enjoying the ride.

1. Bring an audiobook

An audiobook can help you stay awake and make a long car ride fly by. I’ve been listening to George R. R. Martin’s “A Game of Thrones” whilst making the five-hour drive to Atlanta and I was shocked at how quickly it felt like I got there. I didn’t want to get out of the car until I finished the book. Spoiler alert: All your favorite characters die.

2. Bring snacks

Pack yourself some tasty treats for the ride. A full stomach will keep you alert and happy. Take a break from driving and enjoy your food. Many rest stops have picnic tables for you to use.

3. Bring a playlist

If audiobooks aren’t your thing, make a road trip playlist to bring. Rocking out along the highway is always fun. Songs that you can belt out and sing along with are a must.

4. Bring a friend

A traveling companion is the best thing to have on a road trip. They’ll help you stay awake, alert and they might even help you drive. Think of your drive as time that you get to hangout with your friends. Suddenly that long drive doesn’t seem so bad.
