Your voting power is like a sledgehammer. It’s a powerful tool for building, demolishing and shaping things, like the government. But when thrown around carelessly and without a second thought, it can cause permanent damage. Elections are in November, so we’re giving you advance notice on how to conduct your own make-do investigations in lieu of the detailed research you should be doing on the candidates. We’re still a month out, so you have plenty of time. We urge you to take the five or 10 minutes you need to Google the candidate you’re going to vote for. Take a critical look at their policies. Don’t let your gut lead you astray. Even if you only cram in a few Google searches, always vote with your head. Think of it like you do when you rush to complete a last-minute assignment.

The Alligator spoke to students at the event about why voting matters, and what they feel are the most critical issues facing the nation. Here are five of their responses:
Florida tight end R.J. Raymond was a man deep in his thoughts. He strolled silently onto the field at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, Tennessee, about half an hour before any other Gators — even the special-teamers — made their way out of the locker room to get some extra catches in before the game.
The World Bank estimates that women account for 45.8 percent of the labor force in the U.S. Despite our near-equal presence, many women still don’t feel comfortable and confident in the workplace.
The toilet flushes, sending miniature droplets flying toward my face. Typically the distance between one’s face and the seat of a public toilet would suggest some sort of hazing, but hazing is against the rules here at UF so that means it doesn’t happen (aside from that one dude who almost died last Spring).
Growing up, I was what my parents called an adventurous eater. Although that can mean many different things depending on how you define adventurous, all you need to know is that by the time I was 8, while the majority of my classmates and friends swore by the kids menu, my wish was to go out for sushi.

The destructive algal bloom that continues to ravage Florida’s coast has shown us that if Florida Gov. Rick Scott won’t work to save our environment, we must elect new leaders who will.
