Toward the end of the recent Republican debate, candidates were asked which woman they would put on the $10 bill. While moderator Jake Tapper called it a lighthearted question, it actually gave a lot of insight into the problems with the Republican candidates.

Another day, another dollar. Another week… another five dollars? Ignoring our poor excuse for an intro, it’s time for this week’s edition of…

In the current news cycle, the issue of immigration is drawing more attention than usual. This is partly due to what is going on in our own country, namely, our upcoming presidential election. It doesn’t help that the current GOP frontrunner is the most explicitly nativist public figure since Daniel Day-Lewis’ character in "Gangs of New York."

As noted in last week’s Darts & Laurels, a Kentucky clerk has been jailed for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. She appealed her case all the way to the Supreme Court — who ruled this summer that marriage is a right to be enjoyed by all — and was denied an appeal. Despite being effectively ordered to do so by the highest authority of law in the U.S., she still refused to issue licenses.

In a recent interview with CNN, Carly Fiorina stated that despite admiring Jeb Bush’s multilingualism, English is the official language of the U.S. She seems to have forgotten that there are many cultures and languages represented within the U.S., each deserving to be understood and valued. While English is undoubtedly the default language, that doesn’t mean it is the official one.

This week, like all other weeks, was a week. It had seven days, each 24 hours in length, and it probably went by far too quickly for your tastes. Like other weeks, it has a Friday, which happens to be today. On Fridays, the Alligator usually runs a piece called Darts and Laurels. By that logic, it would mean that it’s time for…

Illegal immigration has been a constant talking point of recent election cycles. But what was usually reserved as a single debate question late into the general election has become a front-and-center issue within the GOP primary. From the Great Wall of Trump to the more empathetic Bush, we are seeing the big-tent party hosting many opinions on this single issue.

Black Lives Matter has become the most powerful movement in the national dialogue. Whether you agree with it or not, its message of detailing the inherent racism in many aspects of American life has kick-started an important conversation about race as it pertains to ideas such as white privilege. In the interest of full disclosure, I support the movement; I have been in situations that would have had a tremendously different outcome were I not white. With that said, the movement has problems that need resolving if it is going to create lasting, meaningful change in the country.

Thus far, the 2016 presidential election has been the most opulent and luxurious race for the White House in recent memory. The primary reason for this has been the candidacy of Donald J. Trump. The billionaire’s no-holds-barred sound bites and — oddly enough — every-man attitude have rallied many in both the middle and the right to his cause.

November 2016 is more than a year away, but the Republican Party is already making the same fatal mistake it did in 2012.

Hillary Clinton decided to shake things up when she announced her presidential campaign Sunday. Instead of launching her candidacy with a forced, painfully rehearsed, one-on-one conversation with a camera like she did in 2007, Clinton released a well-executed video with a diverse cast of characters.

Good god — another day, another campaign announcement. This is starting to get out of hand. There’s what, 18, 19 months until the election?

If the events of last week told us anything, it’s that Republicans are behind the times. A great illustration of this was when Gov. Mike Pence of Indiana was shocked over the backlash of his state’s religious liberty law. Any casual political observer could see that Indiana was playing with fire.

According to many news sources, Sen. Rand Paul will be announcing his candidacy for president Tuesday and will then engage in a five-state, five-day announcement tour. Paul, who is the son of former Congressman Dr. Ron Paul, is an ophthalmologist-turned-politician who was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010 and has not been one to shy away from controversy. While many Republicans go with the flow of the Grand Old Party and often do not hesitate to inflate the deficit or ignore major problems, Paul has been one of the few shining stars of the party. He addresses the concerns of middle-class Americans, and his commitment to libertarian conservatism and advancing liberty makes him stand out from the crowd.

In order to win an election, a campaign has to mobilize voters. The best way to mobilize voters is to go after galvanized and organized groups of constituents.

On Monday, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz announced his candidacy for president of the U.S. With the simple tweet “I’m running for President and I hope to earn your support!” the 2016 election season began. The checks will be written. There will be stump speeches. Babies will be kissed. Ronald Reagan will be invoked. Flag pins will be worn.
