The results of Gainesville's mayoral election will not be thrown out, a judge ruled late Wednesday.
Without uncertainty over the election results, Craig Lowe was sworn in as the new mayor of Gainesville Thursday afternoon.
The lawsuit was filed by Mason Alley and Phil Courson, supporters of Don Marsh, who raised questions about illegal voter registration.
Although Alachua County Circuit Judge Victor L. Hulslander dismissed the request to hold a new election, he ruled they could move forward with the part of the suit that would compel Supervisor of Elections Pam Carpenter to provide information on the maintenance of the county's voter rolls.
"We believe they may be some sort of systemic problem with the way the voter rolls are kept up to date," said Sarah Rumpf, attorney for Alley and Courson.
Rumpf said they don't know whether they will appeal the first decision or if they even want to move forward with the second, but they should know within a week.
Cherie Fine, Lowe's attorney, said she is pleased with the judge's ruling, and she thinks Carpenter has done everything appropriately.
Alley said he felt the decision was fair, and he offered his best wishes to the new mayor.
"We congratulate Mayor Lowe on his being sworn in today," he said, speaking for Courson.
