City Commission approves development plan

The Gainesville City Commission voted to approve the long-debated Hatchet Creek Development in East Gainesville late Monday night.

By a 4-3 vote, the commission approved the project with a large number of changes to the original proposal and room to make additional changes if necessary.

Commissioners and officials with the Gainesville Regional Airport had earlier expressed concerns that part of the development would be within the Airport Noise Zone.

The developers cannot build residences in industrially zoned land near the airport, commissioners ruled, though the developers still want to build in the area.

The developers will have an opportunity to re-present a modified application if they decide to, Mayor Pegeen Hanrahan said.

The commissioners are waiting to hear back from the Federal Aviation Administration to get a better understanding of how close residential buildings can be to the airport.

The development could include 1,199 residential units, an assisted living facility and 200,000 feet of office and commercial space.
