Southwest 20th Avenue lane closures began Monday as part of a Southwest 24th Avenue two-lane construction project.
It will affect the road between Southwest 34th Street and Southwest 38th Terrace from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Jennifer Spagnoli, Alachua County project manager for 24th Avenue, said Southwest 20th Avenue is widening to accommodate a turn lane onto Southwest 38th Terrace. It will eventually be repaved in the spring, she said.
Spagnoli said the construction is expected to last about two weeks and shouldn't block off the road entirely.
She said a concrete pipe will be placed on the north side of the roadway for storm water improvements.
"They can work at night if they want to," she said. "We will not allow a full road closure."
The Regional Transit System bus routes have not been affected.
Theresa Harrison, RTS spokeswoman, said additional time might be required for buses to run that route.
"The buses have been able to move quickly enough and efficiently enough," Harrison said.
Spagnoli said traffic has been running smoothly.
If traffic builds up, the county might remove construction workers from the roads until they are cleared.
