I found myself a little surprised after reading "Overheard in Gainesville" in Thursday's Avenue section. The final quote, by a "sorostitute," would have little apparent humor apart from the girl presumably being in a sorority. Some people might find it funny, but why not throw in hilarious quotes about other people?
I have one for you: Black guy: "But seriously, I really like fried chicken now."
I'm obviously exaggerating, but both quotes are loaded with stereotypes too easily perpetuated by this kind of lax cultural dialogue. The Alligator should be more conscious of what it prints. I feel the Alligator takes an unnecessary anti-Greek stance far too often. I am in a fraternity, and the stereotypes are true only to the extent that race and gender stereotypes are also true, though racist and sexist articles are rarely printed.
