Students auction themselves off for children's charity

Shaun Young, a member of UF's tennis team, stripped down to his black spandex underwear Monday night to help raise money for children.

Showing off his muscles got Young the highest bid for the night at ,220.

Young was one of 22 UF students participating in the Social Studies Inc. Holiday Date Auction to help raise money for the Early Learning Coalition of Alachua County.

"It was maybe borderline inappropriate, but it ended up raising a lot of money for kids, and that's what's important," Young said.

David Sinopoli, president and co-founder of Social Studies Inc., hosted the auction in downtown Gainesville at Gotham Grille.

The contestants were UF students, leaders of organizations, sorority and fraternity members, and athletes.

Student Body President Ryan Moseley participated and was auctioned off for ,65.

Sinopoli said the date auction produced about ,1,500 from bids and more than ,1,000 from cover charges.

"The market for charities at UF is really oversaturated," Sinopoli said. "I think we went at it in a different way."

Jade Marcus, the coalition's community outreach coordinator, said the coalition provides financial assistance and readiness services for children up to 5 years old from low-income families.

Sinopoli said the auction was successful because candidates promoted themselves.

"They don't want to go up and hear crickets," he said.
