Construction keeps Southwest Depot Ave. closed

The maze of traffic cones and orange netting along Southwest Depot Avenue will continue to close the road off to traffic through Monday, according to Gina Hawkins, City of Gainesville Public Works Department spokeswoman.

The road will be shut down between Southwest Sixth and Southwest Eighth streets while Gainesville Regional Utilities installs two manholes, she said

A nearby portion of Southwest Sixth Street was also closed to traffic from Jan. 11 to Jan. 13.

Construction along those blocks should be done by early summer, Hawkins said.

As far as other parts of Southwest Depot Avenue, construction could continue until 2010 as part of a larger city project to revitalize the road, she said.

Lauren Dobson, a UF statistics senior, lives in the midst of the construction at Royal Village Apartments.

"I've been sitting in my bedroom and heard tractors reversing and stuff," she said. "They get pretty noisy."

Road closures have also made driving to campus difficult, she said.

Hawkins said the city has tried to accommodate residents as much as possible.
