Agency investigates police officer's part in fatal car accident

The Florida Highway Patrol is planning to release a report within the next 30 to 60 days determining what factors led an Alachua policeman to accidentally run over and kill a woman lying in a driveway early Sunday morning.

Lt. Pat Riordan, FHP spokesman, said the agency is considering road conditions, visibility and even what the woman was wearing in its report.

"Who's at fault?" Riordan asked. "How did this happen? We're required to find out anytime a crash involves death."

Officer Chad Scott, the 45-year-old policeman under investigation, is on administrative leave for an undecided amount of time.

Scott responded to a complaint around 2 a.m. from a resident about a drunk female visitor. The visitor, Angela Tanner, 33, was lying in the dirt driveway when Scott drove up to the house, according to an FHP media release.

He was driving about 15 mph and saw Tanner at the last second. The release stated that he tried to avoid her by swerving.

Detective Patrick Barcia, who is dealing with the police department's internal investigation, said Scott will be offered counseling for the incident.

"It is very difficult when an officer has to live with something like this," Barcia said.
