Barr supporters, Sept. 11 protestors share street corner to demonstrate

Sign-wavers from two unrelated political groups peacefully shared the corner of University Avenue and West 13th Street on Thursday.

On the southwest corner, members of College Libertarians showed support for presidential candidate Bob Barr. Across 13th Street, another group commemorated the seventh anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks by calling for a government investigation.

"We want justice for those people," said Al Garfield, 52, who said he wanted government officials to go on trial for the attacks.

The protesters, who believe the Sept. 11 attacks were part of a political ploy, were not part of an official group, he said, though some had been out on the corner last year, as well.

"I do think a small percentage of people out there are starting to smell a rat," Garfield said.

Across the street, College Libertarians President Neal Conner said he didn't mind sharing the area.

"That's their right to protest and demonstrate," Conner said.

The organization was out spreading the word that Barr is scheduled to visit UF on Sept. 23 and calling for representation in televised presidential debates, he said.

"We're out here to promote Bob Barr and promote his message of liberty," Conner said.

Member Erik Maclean, a UF electrical engineering senior, said the College Libertarians did not intend to schedule their demonstration for the Sept. 11 anniversary.

"We didn't realize it was until we got out here," Maclean said.
