Sinclair, Hartung show off dance moves during down time

It has elements of Tae Bo, dancing and gymnastics all rolled into one.

It is nameless - for now - but it can't go unrecognized.

What started as a time-killing dance in practice at the beginning of the season has evolved into a no-longer-behind-closed-doors dance routine between Melanie Sinclair and Corey Hartung.

Since the dance number's infancy, the duo tried to improve and add to the dance because it wasn't just an alternative to thumb-twiddling in practice while waiting around.

"We did it at the meets because they play good pump-up music," Hartung said. "So Mel and I are always, 'Let's go on the floor and do our dance.' We're always silly and playing around anyway."

Perhaps it's the dance itself, or Sinclair and Hartung's attempts to keep a straight face during the dance, but the dance has caught on, at least in the gym. Hartung said sometimes the other gymnasts just ask them to put on the show.

It's a show that started spontaneously, but a show that requires the right beat. And yes, beat is imperative. It can't be too fast. It can't be too slow. It has to be just right, and that means something that both Sinclair and Hartung can dance to, including "Wop" by J. Dash and "Womanizer" by Britney Spears.

UF coach Rhonda Faehn said she didn't have anything like the dance when she was a member of the UCLA gymnastics team.

"I think that we were almost too afraid to be acting like we were not focusing in the (bye rounds) or in the locker room," Faehn said.

While it's not a custom she grew up with, she loves the notion of her team being comfortable and mature enough to have fun in the locker room and carry it out on the competition floor.

Sinclair said she doesn't mind doing the dance at competitions.

"I think it loosens me up because instead of sitting in the corner waiting and overthinking my skills, I'm doing something that I enjoy doing," she said.

And the twosome has put the dance on display at some significant venues, most recently the NCAA North Central Regional Championship in Iowa City, Iowa, where the dance was caught on the video screen, and at the Southeastern Conference Championships.

"It just blossomed into this thing that we just do every meet now, over and over," Sinclair said. "Every time a good beat comes on, we'll look at each other like, 'It's time.'"

GATORS IN SESSION 1: On the heels of winning the NCAA North Central Regional Championship, the No. 5 UF gymnastics team will compete in Session 1 of the NCAA Championships beginning on April 16. There are two sessions, each consisting of six teams. The top three teams from each session advance to the NCAA Super Six competition, where the NCAA champ will be crowned.

Joining the Gators in their session are defending NCAA champion Georgia, LSU, Penn State, Stanford and Oklahoma.

"Our goal is, obviously, to go in there and compete the way we competed at regionals and the way we competed at SECs," Faehn said. "(The gymnasts) know what to do We've competed all year long, it's just making sure that their minds are fresh."
