Have you ever wondered what would happen if you were to take the vocals from one song and combine them with the instrumentals of another? Well, Chicago-based production duo The Hood Internet has become a master in the art of creating "mashups" and will be showcasing its talent in Gainesville next week.
Sharing the stage with Nicos Gun, Bang Bang Boom and Cassolette, The Hood Internet will be performing for a live audience at Double Down Live at 210 SW Second Ave. on Oct. 12.
"This will be our first time in Gainesville," said Steve Reidell, one half of the duo. "And we're looking forward to playing again here."
The Hood Internet, composed of Aaron Brink (aka ABX) and Steve Reidell (aka STV SLV), is a well-known production group that specializes in the combination and mixing of hip-hop instrumentals with indie rock vocals, and vice versa, to create unique and original songs known as "mashups."
Since the group's formation in 2007, The Hood Internet has released seven mixtapes, as well as hundreds of free-to-download singles that can be found on the group's website at thehoodinternet.com.
One of the most notable singles released by The Hood Internet includes its mashing of the Beastie Boys' "Shake Your Rump" with Matt & Kim's "Good Ol' Fashion Nightmare."
The end result, titled "Good Ol' Fashion Rump Shaker," is an upbeat jam that keeps your head nodding while listening to the booming voice of the Beastie Boys rap over the instrumentals of Matt & Kim.
For the The Hood Internet's Gainesville appearance, Grooveshark and Garage Mahal will be sponsoring the show.
"We chose to have [The Hood Internet] play Double Down Live because we've been a fan of the venue since the Common Grounds and Covered Dish days," said Vishal Agarwala, director of sponsorship and events at Grooveshark.
As for The Hood Internet's set list at Double Down Live, Reidell said Brink and he will be playing a selection of songs from the past four-and-a-half years.
Doors for the show will open at 9 p.m. with a starting time at 10 p.m. Tickets are $9 in advance or $15 at the door and are available for purchase online at TicketWeb.com. The show is for those 18 and older unless accompanied by a parent or guardian.
