Police have arrested and charged a Gainesville man in connection with a shooting outside a local nightclub earlier this month.

Malik Rumeal Johnson, 24, of 3826 SW 30th Terrace, was charged Tuesday with attempted murder, shooting into an occupied building and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Police said Johnson retrieved a handgun from his car May 14 after he was ejected from the club.

Surveillance camera footage shows a man firing shots behind the Florida Theatre at 1:32 a.m. More shots were fired off camera into the west entrance of the building.

No one was injured in the shooting.

Johnson admitted to firing at people. Investigators are trying to determine whether a firearm being held by one of Johnson’s friends was used in the shooting.

He was already being held at Alachua County Jail for violating his probation in another case when he was arrested.

Gainesville Police spokeswoman Cpl. Angelina Valuri said police are not releasing more information at this time.
