A 59-year-old woman was struck and killed by a mid-sized pickup truck traveling north on Northwest 13th Street on Wednesday night.

The local woman was traveling east and had already passed the street's two southbound lanes and median before she stepped in front of moderate northbound traffic at about 9:10 p.m., Gainesville Police Sgt. Michael Douglas said. She was struck about 100 yards south of the intersection and crosswalk of Northwest 13th Street and Northwest 39th Avenue.

A nearby off-duty police officer tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate the victim, and she was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident at approximately 9:25 p.m.

Douglas said police are unsure how fast the vehicle was moving at the time of the accident, but the road's speed limit is 45 mph.

“There's no reason to think the driver was doing anything unlawful,” he said.
