UF will be flooded with school spirit Saturday as students jog through campus covered in orange and blue powder during the first Gator Run.
The UF Alumni Association is hosting the 5K run to bring Gators together, to encourage student membership and to give back to the community.
Registration for the run begins at 3 p.m. on Flavet Field, and the run starts at 4:30 p.m.
Student Alumni Association philanthropy chairwoman and Florida Cicerone Mercedes Castro said about 900 people have already registered online. She hopes registration exceeds 1,000 on Saturday.
Throughout five color zones, hundreds of pounds of orange and blue powder will be thrown onto the runners.
“We wanted to do something that would bring the hype back into the UF Alumni Association,” said Castro, a 22-year-old marketing senior.
Castro said participants should come to the run with school supplies to benefit Project Makeover, an organization that assists local elementary schools in Gainesville.
The University Police-approved course starts on Flavet Field and goes through Fraternity Row. There will be a post-race celebration on Flavet Field.
“It will be like a powder party after the run,” Castro said.
Former cross country runner Andrea Esinhart was looking for a laid-back way to run. The 19-year-old UF nursing freshman registered with her Phi Mu sisters.
“I’m looking forward to pushing my friends to run the entire thing,” Esinhart said.
