Wine-os (and food lovers) welcome at Wine and Cheese Gallery for dinner

Looking to indulge a slightly more sophisticated palate? Downtown Gainesville’s Wine and Cheese Gallery has you covered. Located behind a non-descript door across the street from The Top, Wine and Cheese caters to food and wine lovers alike.

Entering the Gallery, you are greeted by the gourmet food and wine shop, which delivers a vast selection of wines, beers and, of course, cheeses. While overwhelming to those of us who are unfamiliar with wine, those who consider themselves to be “wine-os” will certainly appreciate the Gallery’s treatment of wines as a religious experience.

After working your way through endless rows of bottles, you will emerge in the Gallery’s restaurant. Previously just open for lunch, the restaurant has recently begun serving dinner Thursday through Saturday nights. Not surprisingly, the evening menu caters to cultured tastes with options such as the brine and cheese board ($13), the Portobello and bleu cheese pizza ($15), and roasted marrow bones ($11). However, don’t be put off if these dishes appear too intimidating. The Margherita pizza ($15) and smashed potato and tomato gratin ($7) serve as safe options that could please any taste buds.

On my visit to the Gallery I chose the Romesco pizza, which strays away from the traditional tomato sauce pizzas with its roasted red pepper, garlic and almond Romesco sauce. Topped with bacon strips, Parrano cheese, and basil, the Romesco proved to be a delicious departure from the typical pie. The Downtown mac and cheese was good in concept; however, it lacked real flavor and could have used more of the Parrano and Gruyere cheese.

The Gallery also serves up sweet treats, which meld nicely with the theme of the restaurant in their originality. The ricotta fritter is reminiscent of a beignet, but is not over the top in its sweetness. Served with honey and jam, the powder sugar-dusted fritter is warm, yet crispy. And if you prefer even less sugar, the jam and cheese is a perfect option. Described as “dessert-suitable cheeses,” this dish is also served with honey and jam.

In addition to the restaurant and store, the Gallery also offers up wine tastings and dining events. Tastings are typically held on Tuesday or Wednesday, but it is recommended that you call to reserve your place and pre-pay.
