Readers to book it to biannual Friends of the Library sale

Gainesville book lovers can get their novel fix with the Friends of the Library’s Spring Book Sale starting Saturday.

The sale, which benefits the Alachua County Library District, will take place at the Friends of the Library Book House, 430-B N. Main St. The event will go through Wednesday. Saturday’s sale will run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The remaining sale days are up and running at different times, which can be found on the Friends of the Library website.

Susan Park, membership chair of Friends of the Library and a 20-year volunteer with the organization, said with about 500,000 books available in more than 50 categories, the event is a book lover’s dream.

“I always like to see a rush of people come in at 9 o’clock in the morning with eager anticipation,” she said. “They all have a book they’re looking for. It’s a wonderful opportunity for anyone who likes books.”

But patrons will find more than just books at the sale, she said.

Puzzles, computer software and framed oil paintings will also be available for purchase.

The sale’s Collector’s Corner, which in previous years housed first-edition works from authors such as Robert Frost and William Faulkner, will also be open.

Though most books run between 25 cents and $4, all items drop to half-price Tuesday and down again to 10 cents Wednesday.

Joan Bearden, former president of the organization, said the book sales have raised $2 million for literary projects in Alachua County.

“Our sole purpose is to raise money for the library and for other literacy projects,” she said.
