Gainesvillista: How to layer for winter months

The best way to dress for cold weather is to layer, layer, layer, but there are many ways to do this that might not involve what you think. Of course I would suggest wearing tights or leggings under jeans or wearing tank tops under sweaters to keep warm, but I have some tips about how to layer fashionably. I hope these help you prepare for the inevitable cold weather that is bound to reach Florida at some point this season.

Tip No. 1: Layer sweaters over button-up long-sleeve shirts and have both the sleeves and collar peek out over the sweater. Not only does this look super cute, but it also gives way for other layering opportunities (see below).

Tip No. 2: Over your sweaters, layer different length statement necklaces. Start with a bib-style necklace laying at the sweater's neckline, and then layer a longer necklace to add another element to the look.

Tip No. 3: Instead of layering different necklaces, try layering a short bib necklace with a big, cozy scarf. Arrange the necklace and scarf so you can see the necklace either pop out underneath the scarf, or layer the necklace over the scarf to let it lay right on top. Another way you can accomplish this kind of layering is to keep your scarf under the lapel of a peacoat or other kind of jacket and let the necklace stand out by itself.

Tip No. 4: If you have the dilemma of wanting to wear tights with a dress or skirt but your feet are still cold, simply add a pair of patterned socks over the tights and have them stick out above a pair or boots or booties. Target has a great selection of over-the-knee socks for tall boots, and H&M has so many stylish socks that work perfectly to stick out over shorter booties.

Tip No. 5: Quilted vests are making a comeback this season, so layer one over a cozy sweater and add a warm scarf. Not only will you stay bundled, but you will also have different textures going on in your look that will definitely help you stand out in a crowd.

Layering can be so easy, as long as you are not afraid to try different trends. Have a little fun this season with your outfits and of course, stay warm.
