Student senators asked how they can help promote UF’s art museum, natural history museum and performing arts center Tuesday.

Student Senate was held at the Florida Museum of Natural History so senators could ask questions to representatives from the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, the Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art and the Florida Museum. Senators asked how Senate could help the programs.

“I thought it was a really great experience for senators to see how our funding has been benefiting students,” said Senate President Pro-Tempore Austin Champoux.

Brian Jose, the director of UF Performing Arts, spoke about how senators can help find the right performers and entertainers for students.

“To me, I would love to start greater conversations,” Jose said. “I’d love to talk to students about themes and needs that need to be addressed across campus.”

Eric Segal, the Harn’s director of education and curator of academic programs, and Allison Hudson, the Harn’s assistant director of development, said UF funding has helped the museum to create more programs, including monthly museum nights.

Senators unanimously approved Kelly O’Neil for the new housing affairs cabinet director. Champoux said O’Neil, who used to be the assistant housing director, was appointed by Student Body President Susan Webster.

Senators also approved $783.84 for the Gator Scuba Club and $142.48 for the Gator Billiards Club.
