One person is dead and four others were injured after a drive-by shooting Sunday night.

At about 10 p.m., Gainesville Police Department officers responded to several calls about shots fired at the Eighth Avenue Food Store located at 1634 NE Eighth Ave. by the Gainesville Community Holiness Church.

Multiple shots were fired from a vehicle traveling southbound on Northeast 17th Street into a crowd standing outside of the Eighth Avenue Food Store.

The vehicle then turned eastbound on Northeast Eighth Avenue, according to a GPD press release.

Medical staff arrived a few minutes after the 911 calls, Glover said.

Five people were shot, one of whom later died at UF Health Shands Hospital as a result of their injuries, according to the press release.

Glover said the other four people were also taken to Shands, but it’s unclear what their conditions are.

The list of gun violence in Gainesville continues to grow as more than 189 reports of gunshots have been reported to the GPD since January. At least 28 people have been reported shot since then, six of whom were juveniles.

GPD is asking anyone who has information about this incident to contact 352-393-7710 or the Alachua County Crime Stoppers at 352-372-7867.
