RTS bus crashes into gatehouse at entrance of Cabana Beach apartment complex

The structure collapsed as a result of the impact

There were no reported injuries following Monday's crash.

An RTS bus crashed into Cabana Beach apartment complex’s gatehouse Monday morning.

RTS bus 0801 crashed into the gatehouse, located between the entrance and exit streets at 1601 SW 51st Terrace, around 11 a.m.

There are no known injuries resulting from the crash, but part of the bus’ windshield on the driver’s side was cracked.

It is unclear how the bus hit the gatehouse.

The bus’s impact caused the structure to collapse. Pillars and wood fragments lined the area, and the roof of the structure sat atop much of the damage. Cracked window panes and shimmering shards of glass dotted the scene.

Josie Colacci, Cabana Beach’s general manager, said she didn’t know how much the damages would cost, but she noted the gatehouse was equipped with a computer and camera system.

Colacci said the gatehouse typically has someone present from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. for security purposes and someone will be keeping watch in the area during those times despite the structure’s collapse.

The bus also struck the gate itself, and the bus-stop sign was broken.

RTS personnel at the scene declined to comment on the incident.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
