Florida Gators’ defensive back Dijon Johnson will not have charges filed against him in relation to a May 2 traffic stop that resulted in his arrest, the Florida State Attorney's Office confirmed.
Johnson, a 21-year-old junior, was arrested during a traffic stop in Tampa and faced multiple felony charges, including possession of a controlled substance and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
Initially pulled over for running a stop sign, Johnson refused to comply with Tampa police officers’ commands to exit the vehicle, leading to the addition of a misdemeanor resisting an officer without violence charge at the time of his arrest.
However, 87 days following the arrest, Johnson is free of charges and can continue preparing for the football season. On July 28, Tim Taylor, Johnson’s attorney, confirmed to the media that the State Attorney’s Office will not be taking further action against the football player.
With the felony charges behind him, Johnson is heading into the 2025 season as one of Florida’s projected starting cornerbacks. The 6’1, 200-pound DB played in all 13 of the Gators games in the 2024 season, starting in five.
After making his first career start against Georgia on November 2, Johnson started the final four games of Florida’s turned-around season as the Gators found a 8-5 finish. He even recorded a career high tackle total against LSU on November 16, with four.
After establishing himself in SEC play by tallying 24 total tackles (16 solo) in 2024, Johnson is poised to be one of UF’s defensive backs to make a splash in the coming season.
With a grueling season looming ahead and the off-field distractions behind, the focus can now shift fully to football as Johnson and the Gators prepare for their August 30 season opener against Long Island University.
