UF student charged with sexual battery

Andrew Shaffer allegedly raped a female student in his Honors Village dorm

A 19-year-old UF student was arrested Sunday night on charges of sexual battery that allegedly happened a week and a half earlier on Sept. 24, according to his arrest report.

Both the UF student, Andrew Shaffer, and the victim were reportedly intoxicated at the time of the incident, the report said.

The victim told police Shaffer had encouraged her to drink about three to five shots while the two were out before he brought her back to his Honors Village dorm.

Shaffer allegedly asked the victim if she wanted to have sex with him and she said no, according to the arrest report.

She then went to lay down in his bed, where she became unconscious because of her level of intoxication, the arrest report said.

Shaffer then allegedly raped her while she slept.

The arrest report noted, “She was both mentally incapacitated and physically helpless and unable to give consent.”

The victim told police she later woke up confused and unaware of what had happened. Shaffer asked her if she was going to get the emergency contraceptive Plan B, prompting the victim to ask what he was talking about.

Shaffer then told her they had sex, according to the arrest report, and she told him she did not remember that happening.

The victim later asked Shaffer over Snapchat if he had used a condom and he said there was no wrapper in his room, according to the arrest report.

Shaffer later admitted to the victim on Snapchat that she had said no and “that what happened wasn’t right,” the report said.

According to screenshots provided to police by the victim, Shaffer was worried about her getting pregnant and sent her $50 via Venmo for a Plan B pill.

During an interview with police, Shaffer said he didn’t remember most of the night, but knows he had sex with the victim but it was consensual. When shown the screenshots of the Snapchat messages, “he would change his story and remember,” according to the arrest report.

Shaffer is being held without bond at the Alachua County Jail.

He is currently enrolled at UF, but he has been issued a trespass warning by the university, banning him from campus for three years, according to UF spokesperson Cynthia Roldan.
