Gainesville man arrested after carrying a gun on Santa Fe campus

Jeffrey Griffith was walking near an athletics field with a holstered firearm

A Gainesville man was arrested Saturday on charges of possessing a firearm on school grounds. Jeffrey Griffith was allegedly carrying a gun near a Santa Fe College athletics field, according to a Santa Fe College Police Department arrest affidavit.

A witness spotted Griffith, 69, with a firearm and flagged down a nearby officer. As SFPD officers approached him, they saw a holstered gun on Griffith’s right hip.

Griffith was handcuffed and told law enforcement he didn’t know it was illegal to carry a weapon on school grounds. He was arrested around 2 p.m., according to the affidavit.

Griffith has an expired concealed weapons permit, and he denied knowing it had expired. The handgun he was carrying was loaded.

Griffith was taken to the Alachua County Jail and is charged with possessing a firearm on school property.
