In its fifth Southeastern Conference matchup of the season, No. 5 Florida took on Vanderbilt in what was a seemingly manageable matchup. But rather than handling business on the road, the Gators left Nashville with their first SEC loss.
Vanderbilt (13-2, 4-2 SEC) cranked the dial and applied enough pressure to expose the cracks in Florida’s defense.
Behind the service line, both the Gators and Commodores were irrefutably lackluster. Florida posted 12 service errors and Vanderbilt had 15. Junior setter Taylor Parks had the most service errors of the game (four), but she did not let that impact the other aspects of her game.
Traditionally allowing her teammates to power away kills, Parks took advantage of chances to strike and formulated her own attacks, tallying a season-high 11 kills. She also logged 30 assists, marking her fifth double-double this season.
Sophomore libero Lily Hayes broke 200 digs on the season, now sitting steady at 213. She sought to stabilize the defense with 16 digs, but the Commodores’ high-powered attack was too much to battle.
At the net, senior outside hitter Kamryn Chaney was slow out of the gates. The Vanderbilt transfer has undoubtedly supercharged Florida’s offense, and on Sunday, it was evident just how valuable she truly is.
Without Chaney working her magic and pummelling away kills, Florida struggled. It wasn’t until she found a rhythm in the second frame that the Gators were able to clinch a set. She was ultimately able to find a groove after her lackluster first set, recording over 10 kills for the ninth time this season.
Even with Chaney’s late-match resurgence, Florida didn’t have enough to tackle the composed Commodores, who maintained the advantage all the way to the win.
Florida moves into its next match seeking vengeance and a comeback. It will face Texas A&M (10-6, 3-1 SEC) at the Reed Arena in College Station, Texas, on Friday. First serve is set for 7 p.m. ET.
