A Gainesville man was arrested around 11:30 p.m. on Thursday after police said he stole $25,000 from Walmart cash registers.

Brandon Ball, 21, commonly known as Trey, was an employee at the Walmart located on 2900 SW 42nd St., according to the Gainesville Police arrest report.

Ball said he took the money in order to pay off a debt he owed a gang and his medical bills, the report said.

After his arrest, Ball told police he took the money while on the job but can’t recall exactly when he started stealing the money. Police said he stole at least $13,000 over the last two months, according to the report.

The store’s surveillance footage captured Ball taking money out of the registers on multiple occasions, the report said. Ball’s coworker, Nicole Blisset, gave the security tapes to the police which were then reviewed to confirm his identity.

Ball has been charged with grand theft involving $20,000 to $99,999. He is presently being held at the Alachua County Jail. His bail is set at $5,000.
