A 21-year-old Gainesville man drowned in a pool at the Bellamy Forge condominium complex shortly before noon Saturday.

The victim, Wayne Lawrence II, who was visiting a friend, swam into the deep end of the complex’s pool and sunk beneath the surface, according to Tscharna Senn, spokeswoman for the Gainesville Police Department.

“Everyone was in the pool having fun,” she said. “They didn’t actually realize he was underwater.”

Once those at the scene realized Lawrence was underwater, they pulled him out and tried to  resuscitate using him CPR, Senn said.

Responding to a call made by someone on the scene, EMS took over upon arrival and transported Lawrence to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Although the investigation is ongoing and no autopsy has been submitted, Senn said the investigating officers do not believe the incident is drug- or alcohol-related.

Senn also said the police have no indication that any suspicious activity or foul play was involved.

Investigators are not currently considering suicide as a possibility, she said.

According to Lawrence’s Facebook page, he was an alumnus of Santa Fe College and Buchholz High School.

Lawrence leaves behind an infant daughter.
