Daniel Foley took a cold shower at Hume Hall on Tuesday morning.

The UF chemical engineering freshman was one of hundreds of students affected by an emergency stream outage Tuesday.

The UF Physical Plant Division turned off steam for 23 buildings on campus, including some residence halls on Gale Lemerand Drive and some engineering buildings.

The steam, which regulates the temperature in the building, could have affected hot water, UF spokeswoman Janine Sikes said. The plant turned off steam after finding a valve near failure.

Workers for the division noticed the problem during routine inspections, she said.

“The Physical Plant Division regularly inspects our infrastructure,” Sikes said.

Although seven days warning are typically given, the Physical Plant sent out notifications one day before the outage.

Sharon Blansett, the assistant to the associate vice president for Student Affairs, said housing staff notified students as soon as they knew.

While Foley said he knew of the outage, he needed to shower after waking up.

“I regret not waking up earlier to take a hot shower,” the 19-year-old said.

All buildings affected by the outage have steam again, Sikes said.
