Teased hair, stilettos and attitude are all welcome at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Reitz Union Rion Ballroom.
Pride Awareness Month will host “Drag Show: The Diva Wears Prada.”
“Drag can be a lifestyle or an expression,” said J.J. Sadler, a first-year graduate student and co-director of the event.
The show will have a fashion motif theme and will feature famous drag queens and kings, he said.
Drag queens include host Jujubee and Chanel from “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” The featured drag kings are Jordan West, who Sadler refers to as a Justin Bieber look-a-like, and Spikey Van Dykey.
“I am ecstatic to meet them,” he said. “The energy that comes from drag queens is great.”
In addition to professional drag performers, the show will feature amateurs from University Club as well as students and community members, Sadler said.
It is the easiest way for the gay community to come together and be involved in a celebration, he said.
After everyone walks down the catwalk, there will a meet-and-greet with the performers. People will be able to ask for autographs and take photos with the performers.
Shawn Abrahams, a freshman and body guard for the event as well as co-director for PAM’s talent show, will be in charge of protecting the drag queens as well as accommodating their requests.
He is excited to meet people that he has seen on TV, but he is also looking forward to seeing the amateur performers.
“Seeing people you may have seen in the Reitz Union dressed in drag is something people may get a kick out off,” he said.
