Last week saw the repetition of what is now a tradition in the U.S.’ consumer culture: Black Friday. We all know what Black Friday looks like: mobs of people in a store rushing for extraordinary deals, people camping outside to get first dibs on a cheap TV or appliance and poor employees enduring all the madness. However, while this chaotic scene may have once had some appeal, time, the evolution of the Internet and our growing awareness of environmental and consumer issues is making Black Friday an irrelevant celebration. It’s time to acknowledge that.

Professional photography isn’t dead, it’s just becoming less appreciated. Newsrooms across the nation are letting go of their professional photographers in favor of less expensive freelancers and amateur photographers. Jobs in photography are decreasing, and photojournalists could be replaced by pretty much anyone with a smartphone.

During discussions of hurricane tracks, forecasts and cones of uncertainty, I’ve heard mention of how the meteorologists discussing these forecasts “always” get it wrong or make mistakes. While I can understand why people feel this way, such comments detract from the important work that meteorologists do.

Few tales are more perplexing than the Alex Jones saga. The eccentric, conspiratorial host of InfoWars seems to be at the center of virtually every controversy, from insinuating that the mass shooting at Sandy Hook was staged (and subsequently being sued for it) to sending child pornography, supposedly unknowingly, to the plaintiffs in a defamation lawsuit.

I can’t deny that I love a good deal. When most people see a sale they immediately perk up, and probably spend a little more than they should. This, unfortunately, is especially true in retail shopping and many people don’t realize how affected they are by the advertising they see-especially online.

Even though you are from Florida, you have never experienced heat like this. The dorm is nice...-ish. But it will do. Nothing can get you down. It’s your first week of college and you’re about to meet your roommate who you met on an online forum. As they knock on the door, you ask yourself, “How weird could they be?” You open the door and a strange saying is plastered across their shirt....
