When Kona Surento’s father started searching for a retirement job, he bought a mini donut machine from Lil’ Orbits and a food truck. He and Surento spent nine months repairing the truck and installing their machine, which took up one-third of the available space. After their venue was sold and the COVID-19 pandemic hit, they closed their mini donut business.

Since 1969, Muscle Shoals Sound Studios in Sheffield, Alabama, has been the birthplace of monumental pieces of music from artists like Aretha Franklin and The Rolling Stones. Yet as of January, local indie musician and 25-year-old UF alum Thomas Allain stood in the very place where those icons breathed life into music, recording nine songs over the course of five days.

While 73% of Gainesville voters cast their November ballots in favor of returning control over public utilities back to the city, the issue remains unresolved — and has moved to a courtroom. A judge ruled on April 2 the Gainesville Regional Utilities Authority Board will remain in control of city utilities due to misleading language on the ballot referendum.
