I wish I had three stomachs. Truly, I do. Because with the brunch menu items from Haile Plantation’s Sisters ranging from dulce de leche crepes and applewood bacon pancakes to huevos rancheros and eggs benedict, there is absolutely no way I could explore every meal that caught my eye.

Vegetarian and vegan diets are believed to be expensive, inconvenient and limiting, so it’s no wonder you find more couch potatoes than sweet potatoes in the average college student’s home. College students have no problem vegging out but are reluctant to go veggie. In Gainesville, however, going veggie is easy once you know where to go.

Walking into The Top, you immediately realize this isn’t your average college-town restaurant. With dim lighting and eclectic décor, the restaurant’s interior is something more akin to a hipster bar in Austin than a Gainesville eatery. Each night of the week has a different specials page, such as Southern Fried Wednesday, which features southern dishes and sides accompanied by longneck and whiskey drink specials.

Downtown, just past the Sun Center, beside the Citizen’s Co-op, the Civic Media Center has a sign on its door. After glancing at the various posters stuck to the inside of the glass — The John Locke Initiative is presenting a discussion, a transgender workshop, a coming poetry jam — the sign makes itself apparent. “The Civic Media Center,” it reads. “Reading Room and Library of the Non-Corporate Press.” The door opens with a creak.

It’s that time of year again when having four classes seems like the end the world. It seems as if teachers within the same department have no communication skills and schedule his or her exams on the same day, back-to-back. If you are lucky enough to have them one day apart, it is hard enough to remember what information is for what class. Study guides become never ending and the readings neglected for the first month of school finally come back to haunt you when the teacher announces you will be held liable for them.

The leaves turn from forest green to crimson red, “Lincoln Park After Dark” (OPI’s famous dark nail polish color) is flying off the shelves faster than “50 Shades of Grey,” and an amber hue on the horizon seems to be ever-present.
