Florida took home its first national championship in 18 years after a neck-and-neck game between the Houston Cougars on Monday night. The Alamodome supported a boxing ring, much by Houston’s invention, and with a national championship hanging in the balance, top-seeded Florida and Houston traded haymakers.

Currently, most Gators are focused on football, exams and costume planning for Halloween. Few are thinking about hurricanes.

As it headed to the SEC Championship, Florida men’s golf was looking to defend its SEC title by securing another win. The team managed to qualify for match play after finishing sixth in stroke play, led by freshman Jack Turner who finished a team-best tied for second. But none of it mattered if it couldn’t capitalize in the quarterfinals.

After two days of waiting, junior Ian Gilligan finally saw his opportunity to secure his first win as a Florida Gator. After ending rounds 1 and 2 behind Missouri senior Jack Lundin, Gilligan was ready to fight out the final round and secure first place.

A program-record-tying round of 62 (-8) led by freshman Ian Giligan, allowed the University of Florida’s men’s golf team to blow out their competition to win the Gators Invitational at Mark Bostick Golf Course for the fifth straight year. With a score of 814 (-26), the Gators were twice as far under par as the University of North Florida team [827 (-13)] who placed second.

Melanie Corrales doesn’t go grocery shopping without her pepper spray, her panic button and her defense key chain. One year ago, when a man lingered behind her as she tried to shop at the Publix next to campus, she wasn’t as prepared.

Editor’s Note: This is part one of a series investigating sexual violence on campus.

Walking down UF Fraternity Row, one might take note of the tall facades of three identical southern-style mansions facing out towards the street or the surprising presence of ample parking, an all-too-precious commodity on such a crowded campus. What’s the most remarkable feature? The noticeable lack of emergency blue lights – the stationary police hotlines equipped with cameras which seem ever-present on the rest of campus. This information is truly disconcerting when it is taken into account that an approximated 33 percent of the campus’s sexual assaults take place here, and 58 percent take place in nearby dorms.

So there I was, reconsidering my life decisions at a 7 a.m. Senate Judiciary Committee meeting when the topic of blue lights came up. There was a resolution, specifically a “Resolution Recommending Installation of Emergency Blue Light Phones Along and Adjacent to Fraternity Drive.” Apparently, there are not many blue lights around Fraternity Row, which is slightly concerning because we all know what can happen around there.

After Week 3 left us with more questions than answers (Was UF’s win vs. Tennessee a fluke? What really qualifies as a “Hail Mary?” Will freshman DB McArthur Burnett ever get tired of flipping off opposing fans?), the Gators leave behind palm trees for bluegrass as they take on the Kentucky Wildcats in Lexington on Saturday. Kentucky hasn’t beaten Florida in 30 years, since Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, and way before Nirvana. What would be more impressive than UK snapping the streak? One of our picks competitors going 8-for-8. But before we meet our pickers, let’s have alligatorSports writers Ian Cohen and Dylan Dixon give us an in-depth breakdown of one of the games we’ll be watching this weekend (if there are no other games on): Ball State @ Western Kentucky.

Jim McElwain is under a lot of pressure at the beginning of his third season. He has to deal with the pressure of starting quarterback Feleipe Franks, a redshirt freshman who’s never thrown a pass in a college football game. He also has to deal with the pressure of going up against Jim Harbaugh’s Wolverines without his star running back, Jordan Scarlett, and star receiver, Antonio Callaway, who have been suspended for disciplinary issues.
