I’m sad and disappointed most UF students — probably an overwhelming majority — don’t participate in local politics. We spend practically four years of our lives in Gainesville. We eat, live and spend a lot of money in this fair city. When issues of utility rates, transportation and public safety are brought up in local politics, students should pay close attention — is there a better time to get involved in Gainesville politics than right now?

Pronounce this phrase as quickly as possible: “The hat rack tapped the bottle.” Now, take the words: “hat rack,” “tap” and “bottle,” read them aloud and sound out each individual sound, paying careful attention to how you pronounce the sounds that are written with the letter <t>. In the 10 minutes I could bear to watch Sunday’s Democratic debate, I was struck by Bernie Sanders’ speech – namely, his accent. Proust once wrote memory isn’t contained within us, but all around us, in the seasons that come and go and remind us the world goes on. And so every winter, I remember the winters previous, going back to the first one when I came to Gainesville, on the edge of beginning my so-called real life.

Say what you will of the political right, but at least they are politically consistent. From the decrepit-moderate branch to the slow-people bible study group that controls the most powerful country in the world, Republicans just want to hurt people. Jeb Bush is fine with "stuff" happening to the poor and disadvantaged, and Ted Cruz needs women to suffer for their chromosomal sins. Our left doesn’t know what it wants, especially in our generation, and it only wants to point out the ideological sins of its compatriots.

In 2004, "South Park" aired the episode "Douche and Turd." The episode concerned an election to adopt a new mascot for South Park Elementary, with the two sole choices being the titular Giant Douche and Turd Sandwich. The show, which aired a week before the nation had to choose between George W. Bush and John Kerry for the presidency, not only satirized the often-mediocre choices we face come election season but also the sheer frenzy Americans are prone to work themselves into when they take a stance on public figures.

On Monday, a fellow opinion columnist wrote about how he felt Ann Coulter should be a guest speaker on campus. While I would concede there is a need for more conservative speakers, I could not disagree more. Coulter is the last conservative speaker we need.
