Despite a Monday incident where officers of the University Police Department Tasered and arrested a UF student during a speech by Sen. John Kerry, Student Government's speakers bureau will continue to operate normally, an SG official said Tuesday.

Using Taser on student was out of line
An article in Friday's Alligator said an ad hoc committee might be formed to alter Student Government rules, but Kim Cruts, SG's press secretary, says there are no plans to create that committee.
A UF student was shot with a Taser gun today at a campus forum with U.S. Sen. John Kerry.
Never before have I been so against a proposal from the Student Senate and so supportive of an editorial from the Alligator. Accent's success lies not only in the experience, professionalism and dedication of its staff, but in its independence from Student Government's legislative branch. The Accent chairperson must be free to act quickly to respond to offers from speakers and be able to act even quicker to research and bid on potential speakers. Requiring the Accent chairperson to report to the Student Senate and ask for approval would strangle Accent's success.
Although I agree there is nothing wrong with controversial speakers, I believe that ,50,000 is a steep price to pay someone convicted of murder and stripped of his medical license. The truth is Mr. Kevorkian is a very sick individual whose ultimate goal is to experiment on the living.
While the Accent Speaker's Bureau chairman said feedback is important, the organization is working fine without the Student Senate.
We hate to say it, but one Student Government organization is actually doing something right. Not everything, mind you, but we'll give credit where credit's due.

UF will host two experts on environmentally friendly business strategies for The Business Case for Sustainability and UF Sustainability Showcase on Monday and Tuesday. L. Hunter Lovins and Bob Willard will address the ways in which businesses can benefit from eco-friendly practices. Doors will open for the first speech at 6 p.m., and speeches will begin at 7 p.m. in the Reitz Union Ballroom on Monday. As part of the showcase, nearly 30 student groups are registered to table at the Reitz Union before and after the presentation.
Though he canceled his visit to UF in the spring, Sen. John Kerry will speak at the University Auditorium on Sept. 17 at noon.
