Four hundred and four years ago today the infamous Gunpowder Plot to blow up the English Houses of Parliament was foiled, and co-conspirator Guy Fawkes was consequently executed. Though I do not condone acts of violence, this event serves as an important reminder for us all to stay vigilant in the face of tyranny. During the pre-revolutionary era in America, colonists celebrated Nov. 5 to express their anger toward the authoritarian government back in England, providing the foundation for the American Revolution. Today it is celebrated to express opposition to an increasingly belligerent government that not only puts our liberties at risk but also undermines the very principles this country was founded on.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has planted its newest target on college students. No worries, there won't be activists on Turlington Plaza splashing buckets of red paint on our coats. Instead, the group has made becoming vegan easier than ever by tailoring to students' fast-paced, budget-bearing lifestyles through a new cookbook, "PETA's Vegan College Cookbook: 275 Easy, Cheap, and Delicious Recipes to Keep You Vegan at School." The book meets every college student's needs, so excuses for not becoming vegan are as non-existent as the meat in veggie burgers.

Actually I am from South Philly, so although I should have "at least two emotional and psychological disabilities," I sincerely hope you take what I am about to say into consideration.

At 11 p.m., registered nurse Alexis Lynch gulps down a Dr Pepper and some animal crackers to give her energy for the 16th hour of her shift on the pediatrics floor at Shands at UF. She agreed to work late even despite being scheduled to leave at 7 p.m. because there were not enough nurses to cover the shift.
