I always have an open mind when it comes to elections. I’m not a partisan. I want to hear from all the candidates and give them a chance to present their ideas.

When I told my family just over a year ago that I wanted to become a more observant Jew and observe Shabbat, the day of rest, there were a lot of difficult conversations. It is traditional for a Jew not to use technology, to carry anything or to drive on this day. No phone, no wallet, no ID and no car.
UF alumna Lara Alqasem was granted permission to enter Israel after being detained for more than two weeks in an Israeli airport.
On Oct. 5, the Alligator ran a story titled, “UF student detained in Israel will be deported,” which is wrong out of the gates because the subject wasn’t a student but an alumnus. This article introduces us to Lara Alqasem who, due to involvement with BDS, would be deported from Israel where she went to study. This would all be very factual were it not that it quotes the term “anti-Semitic” loosely without any useful context twice; once to describe her actions (in fairness this was a direct quote from the Consulate General of Israel in Miami) and once to describe the movement. While this is quoted material, there is no argument given against the statements. This is clear character assassination that needlessly smears Alqasem’s image, as well as the movement she is allegedly involved with: Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS).
After two denied appeals and nearly two weeks living in Ben Gurion Airport’s detainment center, UF graduate Lara Alqasem will have her final hearing.
Over two dozen university professors authored a letter to the editor Wednesday, slamming Israel for denying entrance to UF alumna Lara Alqasem, who was accepted into graduate school at Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Although you would expect the highest degree of intellectual honesty from university professors, the piece is neither fair nor honest.
On Oct 2, Lara Alqasem, 22, a former University of Florida graduate was detained at Ben Gurion Airport and ordered deported after Israeli security looked her up on Canary Mission, a right-wing blacklist site. Alqasem was going to study to get an MA at Hebrew University in Jerusalem and had received a visa valid for a year for that purpose. She remains in detention. Lara's detention and possible deportation raises major concerns about study abroad programs in Israel which might well deny entry to students of Palestinian origin or anyone who does not pass the right-wing litmus test. Unfortunately such tests are also being used to deny entry to people engaged in social justice work. Just recently, Professor Katherine Frank who arrived in Israel to lead a delegation of human rights activists, was detained and deported. In light of these concerns a number of faculty from the University of Florida and around the country have signed the statement below for the release of Lara Alqasem.
