Six years ago, the Florida Dream Defenders put forth an action to change the name of the Reitz Union. This was in response to the not-so-new-found knowledge that ex-UF President Julius Wayne Reitz (1955-1967) was both incredibly homophobic and undeniably racist. This was met with antipathy by the white fraternity and sorority members of the Student Senate. The action was denied over claims it violated the Student Constitution. The Reitz family still contributes money to UF, which was a major influence on the Student Government’s dismissal of the action. This also shows money is more important than a student’s feelings of security and what is considered appropriate.

It’s refreshing to see Student Body President Ian Green moving forward with making one of the two major libraries – either Marston Science Library or Library West – 24/7. Ask anyone on campus and they’ll agree that keeping one of those two libraries, ones that, you know, actually have books and plentiful seating, open at all hours is the logical thing to do.

The toilet flushes, sending miniature droplets flying toward my face. Typically the distance between one’s face and the seat of a public toilet would suggest some sort of hazing, but hazing is against the rules here at UF so that means it doesn’t happen (aside from that one dude who almost died last Spring).

As one student flipped through a textbook in the library, her face was equal parts scorn, venom and dread. She let out an exasperated sigh and buried her face in her hands. It’s a typical sight as the semester matures, as classes are delving deeper into substantive material. Many of us have already experienced our first exams of Fall. As we inch closer to midterms, some UF students may be thinking the same thing to themselves: Can I handle this?
