Lately, there’s been some discussion of something called “cancel culture.” Figures from John Oliver to Tucker Carlson have addressed the topic, with sometimes wildly differing perspectives. Now, I’m diving into the fray.

With only a few days left of Women’s History Month, we thought we’d discuss the topic of feminism and what it means in respect to today’s current social and political climate. Feminism is often a misconstrued word, but its most basic definition is equality for all sexes in any social, political and economic sphere. Feminism’s history is extensive and has seen multiple phases all aimed at achieving different goals; however, in most of its history, it has left out key minority groups. In today’s phase, the fourth phase, this is changing.

UF can do better when it comes to preventing sexual assault on campus. There have been reports of sexual assault, and even rape, occurring on our campus this month alone. So when I read an article about how Washington state lawmakers proposed a bill to create a sexual assault task force on college campuses, I wondered why UF doesn’t have such a thing. After all, aren’t we a top eight public university?

Every state and its government have issues that need to be addressed, and Florida is no exception. Florida has made a number of mistakes over its entire 173 years of existence as a part of the U.S., many of them concerning racism.

In 2016, I decided to try online dating apps for the first time. It was great until I was assaulted. Three times. Over the course of less than two years. The first time I was attacked came at the end of an evening I spent with a man I met on Tinder. We had dinner downtown and then went to hang out at his apartment complex’s pool. I figured this was totally safe — neighborhood pools are public areas and there were other people there. I had to use the public bathroom before going back home for the evening, but it was being renovated, so my date invited me to use the bathroom in his apartment before heading home. I agreed. Once I got inside, however, the nightmare every woman fears began. He grabbed my arms — leaving bruises — and attacked my face with his tongue. It was disgusting, but after a few seconds of struggling to get away, I realized that this man was not going to willingly let go of me. My brain went into survival mode: I kissed him back until he let go of my arms, at which point I ran toward the door. I jammed my foot in the doorway as he tried to slam it shut. I knew then that it was time to start screaming for help. He must have known, too, because as soon as I opened my mouth to start screaming, he lost his grip on the door enough that I was able to use my foot and a free hand to pry it open and run away.
