Finally: fee increases went to the right programs

So there I was in Tigert Hall, waiting, watching and livestreaming (of course). It was time for the annual local fee committee meeting. The committee recommended fee increases to help support the Disability Resource Center, Dean of Students Office and Student Government. The University Athletic Association had its proposal voted down. The Counseling & Wellness Center did not submit a proposal, as it is still in the process of hiring new counselors.

This fall’s election has 50 candidates run on Impact Party's ticket and 43 candidates ran under Inspire Party's ticket, according to a list of candidates provided by Supervisor of Elections Henry Fair. This election more contested seats than Fall 2017 elections when 42 seats had multiple candidates.

We should reconsider renaming the Reitz Union

Six years ago, the Florida Dream Defenders put forth an action to change the name of the Reitz Union. This was in response to the not-so-new-found knowledge that ex-UF President Julius Wayne Reitz (1955-1967) was both incredibly homophobic and undeniably racist. This was met with antipathy by the white fraternity and sorority members of the Student Senate. The action was denied over claims it violated the Student Constitution. The Reitz family still contributes money to UF, which was a major influence on the Student Government’s dismissal of the action. This also shows money is more important than a student’s feelings of security and what is considered appropriate.
