We all remember the black screens in 2016 that symbolized solidarity for the Black lives lost at the hands of abusive police officers. In a way, it allowed large groups of people to sympathize with their Black counterparts and show solidarity without ever having to leave the comfort of their own homes. It was the height of performative activism. While Black communities and allies alike banded together to sign petitions, share their stories and protest in spite of massive retaliation, the rest of passive white activists were posting black screens with the BLM slogans followed by useless hashtags and emojis.

Senate Bill 148 has been deemed necessary in Florida’s public universities. This bill encompasses the required audit for Jewish-related courses. Ray Rodrigues, Florida Chancellor of State Education, says in congruence with Gov. Ron DeSantis’s instruction, there will be a need for an outside committee that reviews each Jewish-related course. While this might seem to have elements of control over free expression in college education, these acts have been made in reaction to antisemitic course material in FIU’s Jewish-related courses. A multiple-choice test question asked, “if Zionist organizations invented terrorism.” This was a terrible sight to witness.

On May 1, Florida enacted one of the strictest abortion bans in the country: the Heartbeat Protection Act.
