No. 9 Florida begins its three-game homestand and second conference game against the Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday. Both teams come into the matchup with a lot of questions still left to be answered, so here are three things Florida fans should look out for during the game:
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Florida beat Kentucky despite itself.
Florida opens conference play against Kentucky in just three days, and a lot has happened since the Gators kicked off the season two and a half weeks ago. Injuries have already piled up for both teams, and young or inexperienced players will need to fill in.
One pass changed everything.
A bye week is long and tedious for college football fans. While Florida’s Week 0 battle with Miami on Aug. 24 was entertaining, it left a hole for the UF faithful this week while the rest of the country gets to watch their team play.
Coach Dan Mullen went into Saturday’s matchup against the Miami Hurricanes hoping to win with a conservative mindset. He expected short passes and outside run plays to compensate for an inexperienced offensive line that was sure to have trouble with a Miami defensive line that started four upperclassmen.
The contrast between Florida’s two lines on Saturday in Orlando was evident. No. 8 Florida came out on top against Miami, 24-20, with the help of its defensive line and its aggressiveness at the line of scrimmage, but the offensive line still remains a huge question mark.
Florida takes on the Hurricanes in Orlando on Saturday in the first matchup between the two teams since 2013. Football writers Sam Campisano, Dylan Rudolph, Kyle Wood and Tyler Nettuno give their predictions for the game below.
Florida and Miami will meet in Orlando five days from now to commence the 2019 college football season. Both teams had a lot of turnover during the offseason. Here are three storylines to know about this Gators team heading into this weekend’s contest:
With the NBA playoffs less than two weeks away, let’s take a look at some former Florida Gators who made headlines during the 2018-19 season.
Chris Cantrell’s love for playing began with innocent card games with his sister, Catelyn.
The first quarter seemed to be over.
The sparse Florida crowd at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina, sheepishly tried to revitalize the players, but only in vain.
Ole Miss coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin desperately tried to motivate her team during the final timeout of the game. She slammed her clipboard to the ground and pounded her fist against her red leather jacket looking for a reaction from her players, but she was met with silence.
Guard Funda Nakkasoglu stepped to the free-throw line amid a monster, 23-point performance.
It was over early.
Cam Newbauer just looked down in the post-game press conference. The typically optimistic coach was quiet after his team gave up over 90 points for a second-straight game.
Florida was down 17 early in the third quarter in Athens, Georgia, looking for anything to shift the momentum. An easy rebound floated up for UF, and a sea of Gator hands reached up for the ball. But the big paws of Georgia forward Caliya Robinson soared above them all to snatch the rebound and make the easy put-back.
The Gators walked into the Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, Tennessee, without one of the most important elements in the game of basketball: height. The team was down its starting 6-foot-1 forward, Kristina Moore, after she injured her arm Sunday against Arkansas, and her absence was evident from the first whistle to the last.
